Just like what Brad has mentioned, Google has been THE search engine. The mere fact that a lot of people already use "Google" as a verb which means to search stuff using Google's search engine makes that true.

What will be interesting in the role Google plays in a world dominated by SmartPhones, where search as we know it is not only redefined, but in a way that does not allow Google to play role of gate keeper (or does it with the Motorola+Android combination). HTML 5 always provides some interesting wild card characteristics in terms of new experiences that may leave the hardware provider and operating system out of more and more monetization opportunities.
